FGM Laws Are Being Sacrificed To Protect Male Circumcision Warns Yale Scholar Brian Earp

July 31, 2019 By Tyler Austin

Associate director of the Yale-Hastings program in Ethics and Health Policy Brian D. Earp gave a presentation during the Secularism 2019 event titled Why male circumcision defenders are fighting to make “FGM” legal.

In the presentation, Brian describes how policies, and even laws, are being changed regarding some forms of female genital cutting on minors. He believes that in order for male circumcision to remain legal and not violate equal protection laws granted by the U.S. Constitution, pro-circumcision advocates are attempting to reduce or eliminate the restrictions on female genital cutting.

The typical male operation is more invasive than the typical female operation; only the female operation was regarded as criminal.

Earp’s presentation shows how the legality of both male and female genital cutting are inseparable from one another, and that lawmakers must decide if they want equal protection for all, or no protection for any.
